The UAE Ecological Footprint team is continuing its work into understanding the causes of the high UAE ecological footprint, and conducting analysis to help government leaders develop policies that will help the UAE manage its future footprint. A decision was made to focus advanced research on the electricity sector as carbon represents 80% of the UAE’s ecological footprint, and electricity consumption is a large contributor to the carbon footprint.
The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) was selected by the UAE Ecological Footprint Initiative to lead the development of an electricity scenario model that would allow government leaders to better understand how the UAE’s Footprint may change in the future, based on electricity supply/demand associated with country growth and development, and various government policies planned or proposed. The MIST model is a first-of-its kind electricity scenario model that would provide an indication of both CO2 emissions and Footprints of specific policy implications in the electricity sector
